Explore differing and sometimes conflicting attitudes and approaches to heritage as we tour through the Stadium-Chinatown Station area, go through Chinatown and end near the viaducts where Hogan's Alley is. On this 2 hour tour, we will see examples of retention, demolition, adaptive reuse, what some call living heritage, as well as competing ideas of what revitalization is. In particular, we will discuss the “heritage vs development” era in contrast with the more recent “heritage as development” era. Along the way, we will see and discuss different commemorative acts in urban spaces. They have been important ways for communities in these areas to communicate their stories as a part of public history.
The tour will be led by Heritage Vancouver board member Alasdair Butcher.
About Alasdair
Alasdair is the founder of Vancouver DeTours, a walking tour organization that celebrates the ‘pedagogy of the pedestrian’, and has been leading walks and giving guest lectures on the more obscure aspects of the city’s history to anyone who will listen since 2008. He recently completed his Masters in Urban Studies at SFU, sits on the Vancouver City Planning Commission, and is a Director at the Heritage Vancouver Society.
