This website presents examples of landscape architecture in BC which include parks, public gardens, urban design, as well as commercial and multi-family developments.

The theme for the featured projects in Winter 2023 is Parks. The selected featured projects are located in a variety of different regions across the province.

The criteria for project submissions from BCSLA members are as follows:

1. A completed project which describes the contribution of landscape architecture to site design and development in different contexts. This covers a wide range of land-use and project goals.

2. Social and cultural spaces the public may know well. The intent is to provide a glimpse of history, and describe how landscape architects have contributed to their development.

Songhees Park

This project developed 1.8 acres of new parkland next to the city’s inner harbour. It was designed in collaboration with the Songhees Nation. The new park has places to sit and enjoy spectacular views, Lekwungen art, accessible circulation routes, features that encourage play and exploration, a waterfront viewing platform, upgraded lighting and seating. The planting combines ecology with horticulture and is inspired by local landscapes, including the Garry oak meadow. The park celebrates the theme of Land, Sea and Air, which are connected as a holistic web of life.

This is the first park in Vancouver to be gifted a name by the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. sθәqәlxenәm ts'exwts'áxwi7, meaning 'rainbow', was chosen for this place because the land where the park now sits was once forested with large trees and had many sources of water, including a marsh where the sun and mist would form rainbows. This 0.8 acre site has been transformed into a park of the future, with innovative design, dynamic play areas, art installations, and multi-dimensional walkways that go far beyond the traditional concept of a park.

Topaz Skate and Bike Park

Bike Track, New Line Skateparks Inc., and Van der Zalm + Associates Inc.

2022

The new skate park and bike park have been designed for visitors of all ages and abilities. Features include lighting, a network of barrier-free pedestrian pathways and social areas, native plantings celebrating local ecology, and a large rain garden to treat stormwater. Artist Germaine Koh’s interactive sculptures are located throughout the skatepark. They are inspired by native plants that celebrate energy flows around the site from human movement, natural forces and urban systems.
